The inspiration for "Seven" came from the designer's observation of the current social climate. In recent years, society and individuals have been moving constantly between states of stability and anxiety. Koizumi saw the tensegrity structure, which appears stable yet sways under external forces, as a perfect embodiment of this situation.
"Seven" stands out for its unique use of the tensegrity structure. This structure gives the wind chime an appearance of floating stability. However, when external forces like the wind act upon it, the structure sways to maintain equilibrium. This swaying motion is converted into sound, which resonates through space, adding a touch of healing and color to everyday life.
All parts of "Seven" are made of brass, and the balance is exquisitely maintained. The wind chime was manufactured in Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture, a region known for its metalworking. The production process required a high level of precision and involved specialists in various fields such as casting, bending, and welding.
The project began in September 2021 and was completed in August 2022. The design process involved extensive research on the tensegrity structure and numerous experiments to understand it better. The shape of the wind chime was refined through hundreds of iterations to ensure that it would function as intended. The manufacturing process also required precise technical skills due to the delicate balance of the wind chime.
In conclusion, So Koizumi's "Seven" is a unique wind chime that reflects the unstable social climate of our times. Its innovative use of the tensegrity structure and the exquisite craftsmanship involved in its production make it a deserving winner of the Silver A' Design Award in 2023.
